A brief history of Fox Garage

There was life before Fox Garage

Photo taken in about 1910, showing the Fox Pub almost exactly as it looks now, before Fox Garage started.

A Brief History of Fox Garage

Now in its fourth generation of ownership by the Burn Family, the Garage was started in 1926 as a car hire business operating from the rented Fox Inn stables.

The first photo shows the site as it was in 1930 with five cars and one motorcycle. Serving petrol as we did from the start until local supermarket price competition pushed us out of the market at the end of the 1980s. At this time there was no concept of a single brand sold from the site. Our petrol was supplied by Redline,Pratts, BP and Shell with oil being supplied by Castrol, Mobil and BP.

The second photo shows the site soon after the second world war, complete with the newly developed main building which was used throughout the war to manufacture munitions. Although the detail is lost in the low resolution available to a practical web site, the original photograph clearly shows the signs over the entrances to read Hillman, Austin and Morris and we were selling exclusively Shell petrol as we did until we stopped selling petrol.

At the changeover from Rover to Vauxhall June 8th 1989. Poor quality due to reproduction from a newspaper , but it shows all 9 of our staff with the directors. A far cry from the 100 or so staff currently employed between three sites - and still growing....
